It might seem more suited to the office than the home, but the Satellite R630 is an ultra-portable laptop from Toshiba that packs a lot of power. While most ultra-portables make performance sacrifices to cut down on weight, this 13.3in laptop could easily take the place of a desktop PC.
Like a lot of similarly priced laptops, the Satellite R630 uses an Intel processor. The Core i5-460M runs at 2.53GHz, and should fly through almost any application. Along with 4GB of RAM, everything but heavily multi-threaded programs should be fast. In our multimedia benchmarks, it managed an impressive 91 overall, which puts performance very close to a £550 desktop PC.
There isn't a dedicated graphics card; instead Toshiba has used the Core i5 processor's integrated graphics. This is good enough for playing HD video, but it certainly can't play games at high detail settings. Our Call of Duty test crawled along at 12.8fps, but it should still be able to play older titles.
The 13.3in screen has a very glossy finish, which made it difficult to see in direct sunlight or under harsh office lighting, although viewing angles are decent and there's plenty of tilt to avoid reflections and get the best colours. The 1,366x768 resolution is fairly standard for a screen of this size, but brightness was above average. Colour reproduction wasn't terribly accurate as most images appeared to have a slight blue tint. The backlight was even, though, and black levels were also good.
