Redsn0w 0.9.7 Untethered Jailbreaking

Sunday, 2 January 2011

Redsn0w 0.9.7 beta 4 was released on Friday. This version of the Redsn0w jailbreaking tool simplifies and patches a couple things — it bypasses the need to run the usbmuxd process externally, which several Mac OS X users had trouble with, and the redsn0w crash during the step “Preparing JB Monte Files” has been fixed.
The jailbreaking process using this beta is the same, including that pesky issue with Bluetooth being disabled. Also, those of you experiencing trouble with Skype should know that this bug is still apparent in this release. According to the iPhone Dev-Team:
…Redsn0w no longer requires you to install and run a separate program for the usbmux (this was a non-trivial procedure for many). It’s okay to keep that program running if you normally use it for ssh anyway. We also think we’ve fixed a race condition in the GUI that was causing redsn0w to crash during the “Preparing JB Monte Files” step. Nothing at all has changed on the iPhone side (where the main issues are still just Bluetooth and Skype).
It also appears that a Windows version will be released soon, according to this snippet from the official Redsn0w testers account:
…beta4 will eliminate separate usbmuxd process (so many more Mac users can use it). After that, expand to Windows.
Before you attempt this, check out the list of warnings. If you still want to proceed, then hit the instructions on using this untethered jailbreak here at Redmond Pie (but skip the Step 4 usbmuxd thing). For a video on the process, click here.
